Net Interest Margin Expansion: How to Pull Ahead of Your Peers

In today’s competitive banking environment, improving profitability while balancing risk is no easy task. In this interactive session, Tom will explore how community financial institutions can strengthen net interest margin performance and identify opportunities to outperform their peers. Using current peer data and real-world balance sheet comparisons, he’ll break down key metrics including cost of funds, earning asset yields, liquidity positioning, and overall profitability trends. Attendees will gain practical insight into how their institution stacks up both regionally and nationally—and where opportunities for improvement may exist. Through live surveys and discussion, Tom will also examine how different balance sheet management philosophies shape strategy, risk tolerance, and long-term performance.

Tom Evans, CFA

Tom is a Senior Consultant with HUB | Taylor Advisors, working with institutions across the Midwest, Southeast and Southwest regions. He began his career as a Financial Institution Examiner with the FDIC where he worked with banks in the Southeast region and was an instructor in areas regarding ALCO for new FDIC hires. He then worked for a life insurance asset manager where he covered commercial mortgage and asset backed securities. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, is a member of the Louisville CFA society, and received his BSBA in Finance and Accounting at the University of Kentucky.

Mark began his career in public accounting, auditing private and public financial institutions in the Midwest. Mark joined the team after spending nine years as the Chief Financial Officer for a large residential lender. Mark is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). He received his BSBA in Finance and Accounting from Xavier University.

Scott Earwood

Scott Earwood, Head of Community Banking Division at White Clay, has 20+ years of experience with both national and community financial institutions. He worked in the retail, business banking, and mortgage lines of business.

Scott has been with White Clay for 12+ years and in 2020 helped build out the standardized version of White Clay’s SalesCenter Software that the Community Banking Division uses to help banks start the journey of building deeper and more profitable relationships.

Ryan Hayhurst

Ryan W. Hayhurst is managing partner and president of The Baker Group. Ryan joined the firm in 1991 and now oversees the design and implementation of investment and asset/liability strategies for financial institutions.

He is also integrally involved in the continued development of the firm’s proprietary software designed to assist clients in the management of their investment portfolios and their overall interest rate risk profiles.

Ryan regularly develops and presents educational seminars nationwide, with a focus on investment and interest rate risk management. He is a frequent speaker at financial institution conventions and investment conferences and has served as a faculty member of several national and regional banking schools.

Hayhurst holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Oklahoma.
